Year 8 Options Evening (2021) - Introduction

Unfortunately we have not been able to welcome you to our school to discuss the next steps in your child's education. Choosing the right subjects, which are balanced and helpful, so they can achieve their career aspirations is an important decision so we felt it was important to give you as much of the support and guidance as we normally would - but in a virtual way. Given how important these choices are, we have made as much information available to you as we normally would, so that both you and your child can make the best and most well-informed choices possible regarding their future GCSE studies.

Preparation So Far

In the past few weeks, students will have been sent a link to a service called UniFrog, a careers advisory service, to help prepare them for the next steps. They will have also spent some time with their ICT teacher going through how to use the service to help focus their thoughts on their pathway post-16 to what we hope will be a long and rewarding career.

Additionally, the English department are - this week - delivering a lesson on decision-making, focussing on the hard and soft skills in careers; this will tie into their learning from their UniFrog lesson.

Next Steps - Part 1 >>

Before you review the options available, please watch the "Main Presentation" video below (left), which will cover the pathway process, along with further guidance to help and support you and your child. The video contains important information about the options process, so please take the time to watch it, as it will undoubtedly answer some of the many questions you may have. The other video will cover the process of completing the options form, after having reviewed all of the materials regarding the pathways and options available (they are dependent on their current teaching set).

Next Steps - Part 2 >>

Below, students will have an opportunity to watch a series of videos prepared by their teachers - discussing each of the subjects offered: what is involved, how the course is structured, and what career pathways the qualification can lead to.

The videos are divided into two broad categories:

  • Core - subjects are studied by all students, but we strongly advise you and your child to review the videos, so you are aware of the course content as well as the amount of work / evidence they will need to produce

  • Options - as the name suggests, are chosen by the student. To start, you need to know what teaching set your child is in (this information can be found on their timetable / Teams calendar) – then click on the appropriate link below:

Next Steps – Part 3 >>

Firstly, if you have more questions about the subjects on offer, please contact the subject leader, and they will get back to you as soon as possible with an answer to your query.
